Offering Automotive Cybersecurity Controls, as well as their Enabling Technologies, without Time-to-Market Delays
Karamba’s XGuard Suite for cyber protection in the IoT and automotive arenas started out several years ago, with a focus on hardening the device itself from in-memory and dropper attacks.
Karamba’s mandate was expanded a year ago, to address the need for a full Onboard Security package: i.e., adding basic security modules that are required by various industry standards.
Security controls such as Secure Boot, UDS authentication & authorization, and Secure flashing, were added to the XGuard portfolio, with emphasis on simple integration and minimal to no R&D interference.
XGuard Onboard Security offers not only the required features, but also the underlying technologies behind them, all without requiring the customer R&D teams to change their ongoing development processes, or to develop the required features. Above all, XGuard Onboard Security is now deployed in production projects on legacy microprocessors without requiring the OEM to change the device Bill of Materials, to meet the current security standards.
Such supporting technology, as illustrated in the diagram, includes:
- Cryptographic features and functions: Key management and a hardware abstraction layer
- Secure Onboard Communication (SecOC): Ensure message authenticity, integrity and freshness for in-vehicle communication
- Secure Logging
- Secure Storage: Keys, calibration data, privacy-related data
Within a year of the launch of XGuard Onboard Security, two of Karamba Security’s automotive clients are using the platform in production, each deploying these security layers in several hundred thousand vehicles.
XGuard’s Onboard Security platform is built to assure that users benefit from the following support and compliance coverage:
- MISRA-C coding guidelines
- AUTOSAR specs, including alignment with the AUTOSAR Secure Onboard Communication protocol standard
- Multi-core support
- ISO/SAE 21434
- ISO26262 Functional Safety requirements
